computers are so bad

also btw this definitely said "ruby gem bundle thing", in a "humorously using many related words together" sort of way, but I accidentally dropped "thing" and now it looks like I don't know what I'm talking about

computers are so bad

Just tried to install a ruby gem bundle and wtf, no, if you can't write to /usr/bin the answer is never "silently call sudo in the background and do it anyway"

This actually does satisfy my needs but I'm trying to find one that doesn't say that so I don't have to reward shitty behavior.

Things there are a lot of on Amazon, because of *course* there are: USB-C cables that are not USB 3.x, that explicitly only support 480Mb/s (USB2), but are rated for charging at 3.1A or 3.2A.

Oh good. I got a chance to try restoring my Solo key backup (uni.horse/notes/solo-key-backu) onto a new key and it actually worked.

Well that was unexpected and fancy as heck: I was on a page with some Chinese characters that weren't rendering, installed the noto font set, and Firefox *noticed this and updated the page without reloading*.

grumbling about text formatting

Or it wraps anyway and you get unreadable trash.

grumbling about text formatting

Plain text is a great format because it trivially adapts to the formatting the reader chooses.

Hard wrapping lines to 72/80/100/120/n characters actively goes against that. Now your text wastes space on larger displays *and* requires horizontal scrolling on smaller ones.

Please stop doing that.

marketing

(but still that's creepy as heck why would you do that)

update: I am a dummy, I did get far enough into checkout to enter an email address before deciding against it

marketing

Just got a marketing email from some guy at $furniture_store asking if I needed help placing my order. I was on that site recently, but I wasn't logged in, I don't have an account with them at all, and I don't remember giving them my email address at any point.

How the actual heck?

phones are bad

Oh good, my phone has learned a new form of bullshit: when my alarm goes off in the morning, there are two alarms, and one of them does not stop unless I reboot the phone.

electronics

I have a ridiculous idea and I need someone to convince me not to try it:
- wireless keyboards and mice exist
- wireless HDMI extender things exist
- what if laptop, but there aren't any actual computer bits inside, it's just a set of remote peripherals for a desktop in the shape of a laptop

The docs for this LTE modem from 2022 consist of the Hayes dialup modem command set from the 1980s, followed by 26 chapters of extensions thereto.

It's a wonderful illustration of how modern technology is built.

shit companies have said in response to name changes

"Is [deadname] still with the company?"

(this is a personal account, there is no company)

name changing stuff ±

I hereby award one Internet Point to Vanguard, for being the only financial institution I've changed my name at so far to have a working web form for doing so, and even using their existing 2FA system to verify my identity for it.

The other one I've done recently also did it online, but in the sense that I had to print out some forms, call them, ask them to email me a Secure Upload Link™, and upload photographs of the paper forms. That's their actual documented process. Someone set up that system on purpose.

I may have only just found out that C. S. Lewis and Lewis Carroll were different people. That... would be why he/they appeared to have done so much random stuff.

electronics

Reading a datasheet that is clearly describing an I2C interface, calls it "I2C-style", says it's "interoperable with industry standard implementations of
the I2C serial bus", but notably goes out of its way to never actually claim that the interface *is* I2C.

I feel like I'm about to be tricked in some way.
